There are hundreds of reasons why parrots may damage their feathers, but in most cases, we’ll never know exactly what caused the behaviour to begin. Most caregivers first visit an avian veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical condition. In the majority of cases, however, no medical issue is found that explains the feather destruction.

Instead, I take a holistic approach, looking at the parrot’s overall wellbeing from the inside out. This means considering both physical and emotional health. For more than 10 years, I’ve studied emotions in animals, with a particular focus on parrots.

One thing I’ve learned is what happens in a parrot’s body when it pulls a feather. The act causes the body to release endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers. These chemicals help mask the discomfort caused by feather pulling. Although endorphins are short-lived, they can trigger the release of other “feel-good” neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, which have longer-lasting effects. Over time, repeated feather plucking can become a habit because the Parrot begins seeking that pleasurable emotional response.

Our goal, then, is to replace feather plucking as the source of those positive feelings with healthier, more appropriate activities.

One of the easiest and most effective methods is to introduce extensive foraging opportunities. Rather than providing food in an open bowl, encourage your parrot to work for every meal. Contrary to the common belief that foraging simply keeps a parrot busy, its greatest benefit may lie in the anticipation of finding a reward. The more places food is hidden, the more opportunities your parrot has to experience the excitement of discovery. Each successful find reinforces that positive emotional response and encourages continued exploration.

Not all parrots are highly food-motivated. Fortunately, every animal can be trained if the right reinforcement is used. The caregiver’s job is to discover what their individual parrot finds rewarding. For some parrots, it may be food. For others, it could be physical interaction, or another valued activity.

I am a strong advocate for using a marker signal during training. With parrots, this is typically a clicker, although not all professional trainers agree. My rationale is that the click itself becomes a predictor of something positive. Once the parrot has learned that every click is followed by a reward, the sound of the click begins to trigger anticipation. Once again, anticipation is the key. It is the expectation of receiving a reward—not the reward itself—that stimulates the emotional response associated with dopamine release.

For this reason, every click must be followed by a reward, even if the click was made accidentally. Maintaining that consistency preserves the reliability of the marker and the emotional value it holds for the parrot.

Now that we’ve connected some of the emotional and neurological factors that may contribute to feather-destructive behaviour, let’s explore additional strategies that can help address the problem.
